Visit Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge covering 110,000 acres of land providing habitat for thousands of migratory birds and waterfowl. The refuge owns or has lands surrounding six major water bodies, one being Pungo Lake where more than 80,000 snow geese and tundra swans from northern Alaska and Canada arrive in the fall and winter months.
The Scuppernong River Interpretive Boardwalk is an accessible way to see a variety of birds. More than 200 species of birds have been observed at the refuge including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker which prefers its home in mature pine forests. Whichever mode of transportation you choose, whether its walking or biking trails or paddling your choice of water bodies, Washington County is home to a diverse population of feathered friends for your birding pleasure.
